Strictly Come Dancing viewers were left unimpressed on Saturday as the BBC show swept into the iconic Blackpool Tower ballroom – but one element of the format drew scores of complaints.
Every year Strictly returns to its original Come Dancing home in the Blackpool tower.
The BBC pulls out all the stops to try to make it a magical show, including an opening group dance – this time with Johannes in drag – and backing dancers in every couple’s routine for the only time in the series.
Unfortunately, it was this format change that rankled a lot of viewers as they called the backing dancers ‘distracting’ and accused them of ‘getting in the way’.

@lukedaviesMUFC said: “They are the worst! They really add nothing honestly Blackpool show just isn’t what it used to be.”
@ruth_clark said: “the one thing I really don’t like at all about Blackpool week is the backing dancers, why are they there? Distracting and annoying.
“They’re just annoying and distracting, why are they there, they add nothing?”

@heatherd1961 said; “I always get put off by all these extra backing dancers in the routines”
And even Strictly Spoiler himself @davejthorp agreed, adding; “Oh good the Blackpool backing dancers are back doing what they do best. Getting in the way!”
Angela Scanlon and Carlos Gu were the only couple on the show to sidestep the backing dancers, choosing not to use them for their Argentine Tango.
And after Angela Scanlon and Carlos Gu’s dance, @flopsypickle said; “I think it was a brave choice to not have backing dancers, I think they would distract from a dance that should be intimate, to me an AT is a dance of almost sexual foreplay, it should be close & private, backing dancers would spoil that #Strictly #StrictlyComeDancing”
@strictlysparks said; “Angela and Carlos with Argentine Tango. The only dance to not have any backing dancers tonight.”
@samrandomnumber said: “Kudos to Carlos and Angela for shunning the backing dances when they were not needed. #StrictlyComeDancing”
