Early Life and Education

Mena was born two miles north to Mexico border on 30 April 1981. He grew up obsessed with sports, not journalism. He spent one semester at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) but then left college, feeling unmotivated. However, he got inspired by one of his old friends to continue his education.

Mena, therefore, enrolled at Arizona State University, intending to focus on sports journalism. Phillip graduated in 2008 with a degree from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. It took two years for him to get his first job in broadcasting in his hometown in 2010.

Before that, Mena had gone through the struggle field. He used to work in a health food store while sending out demo tapes and CVs until he had his first job at KTSM El Paso where he worked as a sports reporter a few months later he turned to be the main anchor. While at KTSM, he reported on drug cartels along the border and on corruption in state government.

Mena began his broadcasting career in 2010 at a station in his hometown KTSM El Paso, where he first had to work as a sports reporter before he joined the station anchor team. In 2012, he left El Paso to Houston where he was welcome with open arms by his co-workers at KPRC. During his days at KPRC, he had chances to cover some of the incredible stories such as the West Texas explosion, NASA, and the Adrian Peterson child abuse scandal.

From Houston, he later moved to New York to serve as a correspondent with ABC, before he started working for NBC News in 2015. At present, he works as a Correspondent at MSNBC, where he anchor s NBC Early Today alongside his co-anchor Frances Rivera.
