Citizens in all 27 EU member states have been voting throughout the weekend for the next European parliament. Here are the exit polls and preliminary results, updated continuously as more votes are counted.
The number of seats in the European parliament has fluctuated because of the UK leaving the bloc. There were 751 in the 2019 election, which fell to 705 in 2020 but is now being increased to 720.
The European parliament’s party groups are made up of national-level parties who organise themselves into EU-wide blocs.
Each EU member state is allocated a number of seats approximately relative to the size of their population.
Compared with the outgoing parliament, France, Spain and the Netherlands have each gained two additional seats with nine other members gaining one each.
The European parliament has also released provisional results for member states, which will continuously update as the votes are counted.
